Music Review - Prem Byrne, “How Life Is”: A Soulful Song About Aging, Change and Letting Go

Prem Byrne’s “How Life Is” starts with a fairly ordinary situation: an older man fails his driving test and loses his license. But there’s more going on here than a story about getting behind the wheel. The song looks at aging, independence, and the uncomfortable reality that some things eventually have to change.
The character at the heart of the song doesn’t take the decision well. He believes the DMV got it wrong and insists that he can still drive. It’s a little funny, but also easy to understand. For someone who has spent most of their life being independent, giving up the car can feel like giving up a part of themselves.
Byrne keeps the story light, which works well. He doesn’t turn it into a sad song about growing old. Instead, there’s a dry sense of humor running through it, especially as the younger generation carries on drinking and enjoying themselves while the older man is dealing with a very different stage of life.
The music adds another dimension. Byrne’s soulful voice sits naturally between acoustic and electronic sounds, giving “How Life Is” a warm, slightly atmospheric character. It never feels like the production is trying to overshadow the story. The vocals and lyrics remain the focus.
The song pulls the idea of driving into something much bigger. A license can be taken away. So can many of the things we assume will always be there. That’s where the title really starts to make sense.
“How Life Is” by Prem Byrne is ultimately about accepting change, even when we’re not particularly good at accepting it. There’s humor, a little sadness, and plenty of truth in the story. What begins with a failed driving test ends up being a surprisingly relatable reflection on getting older and where life eventually takes us.
